The source is available.  There are all kinds of different Spirit
reprints currently available from expensive down to way cheap.  Grab
one and make up your own minds.  You won't be sorry.  And your time
will be better spent than it would listening to us.

My take?

The Spirit was the first existential super-hero.  Camus in camouflage.
Also slapstick, minstrel show, adventure story, social commentary,
gritty detective thriller or just plain farce.

All the stuff that Frank Miller added to Batman when he did the Dark
Knight Returns?  He stole all that from the Spirit.  Maybe he's just
giving it back again.
