I believe it would be far more likely that the food would be put into
stasis as part of the packaging process or, in the case of fresh fruit
and veggies, when they're bagged at the store.

I doubt it. The widgmo has to be outside the field, and it would need
a continuous surface, i.e. no stick poking through the mesh and
touching the widgmo. (If your aim is really good, you might be able to
flick something to hit the switch, but that could become an exercise
in futility.)

It's also doubtful that you'd leave the widgmo connected to an object
after the field is initialized. The most useful method would be to
keep the widgmo on a counter where you could conveniently wrap the
items to be preserved before moving them to a storage rack.

For story purposes, you could make the person somewhat disorganized,
turning their vice into a virtue in that instance.

As long as the meshes can become electrically/magnetically connected.

Awkward, but I see no reason why not.

Doubtful -- the connections between links rarely provides a reliable
surface. (Ever try to electroplate an entire mail****rt? You'll find
the voltage varies greatly across it, and there can be whole areas
which are dead.)

Probably nothing, as in no field can be established because there is
not a continuous conductive surface surrounding an enclosed space.
