I read your question in two parts ...."Sterilises the planet"....and .."of
Sufficiently Advanced Technology".
If the purpose is to sterilise the planet , period , then some kind of
"Unobtainium/McGuffin" will suffice .
If it is a question of wiping out advanced technology , then have you
considered a different track such as a psychological or social factor?
There are certain religions or beliefs current which would be perfectly
happy with enforcing ignorance and superstition on a global basis ,
plunging
us into the dark ages .
Even some of the more extreme greens or environmentalists are starting to
sound like they would prefer us to be in the early 17C .
