Depending on your narrative objectives, remember that on earth, the 
headline-and-record-book low temperatures are (almost invariably) recorded

at the bottoms of steep inversions in river valleys and depressions. The 
aboriginal people avoided country like that in winter, leaving fish camps
in 
the fall for the high country, where they hunted or tended flocks. There, 
the temperatures might be 10 or 20 degrees C warmer. They weren't stupid.
