:: 1) What are your first thoughts about what happened?
: Paul Colquhoun <postmaster@[EMAIL PROTECTED]
>
: My first thought on reading this was "I'm the main character from 'The
: Day of the Triffids', or close enough".
:
: 2nd thoughts would be, things are going to get very bad, very soon, if
: nobody else wakes up. Also, I can't look after very many people on my
: own, and even then not for very long.
:: 2) What is the first thing you'd do? The second?
: Try to locate girlfriend/wife/family/etc. Get then to a place where I
: can look after them for a while, in case they wake up.
:
: Setup some system to locate any other people who are awake. Lights at
: night, drive around in a police car or ambulance with the siren going
: (or even a Mr Whippy van playing greensleeves) spring to mind.
Flare gun, or better, fireworks (better because they are also loud)
launched from the top of a large building.
: Check news sources, if available, starting local and working outward.
Yes, I like the way you think. But I wonder... is the internet stillu p?
Presumably, there's not time for print news to have captured this; I'd
kind of expect problems getting newspapers out in the face of it.
But if the internet is still sitting there, bloggers (and newsgroups)
will presumably been up right up to the event (or iirc, *during* it
as a rather prolonged thing), and you'd have the benefit of reading
lots and lots of people's speculation. It won't stay up long, but
it's only been 26 hours.
Oh, and of course, it might form a way to look for others.
If you wanted to find anybody still updating anything to the web...
what would you do? Unfortunately, lots of them will be maintenance bots.
Ie, your favortite webcomics might update for *days*.
:: 3) What precautions might you think about to prevent it from happening
:: again?
: If I don't know how it happened the first time, I can only take
: general precautions. Leave town, stay away from other people, only
: eat canned/bottles food, etc.
Ah, but would you try to stay awake as long as you could, or would
you assume you would wake up again if you fall asleep? Possibly
research on news and/or web info would help you decide that.
But as you say, without more information, not much effective
you could do. Maybe try to find a source of provigil, but
even so.
