What I'd do is try waking them up by the normal method.

I did list that as one of the things I'd try before leaving the 
hospital. However, I wasn't thinking specifically in terms of people in 
that room, so if your protagonist thinks like me, you're perfectly free 
to assume the few random people he picks to try to wake, happen to be in 
other parts of the building.
