Are you familiar with the phrase, "Damning with faint praise"?

I'd have to agree with Erik that there is at least one (more like
several stumbling blocks here, but there was also a short story that
was published with a similar plot line. The short version is there is
a human that for some reason simply doesn't need sleep*, and is always
awake. As the world starts to fall asleep (due to something being
emitted from a comet), he ends up being the only one to be awake in a
world that will soon starve to death. He continues the work of s
scientist (his girlfriends father, IMS?), produces a radio device that
cancels out the EM waves that are causing the problem, thus waking the
local area who can continue to spread copies of the "jammer" to the
rest of the world.

Twist at the end - the EM field that wakes everyone else up puts him
to sleep at the end of the story. anybody got the name?

*yes, I know that mammals don't do well without sleep (at least REM),
and I know comets don't emit EM fields, etc. These were huge stretch
of a plot device even for me as a kid, but the story sounds remarkably
similar to this thread.
