I don't write hard sf -- my focus is on the people who have to deal
with the hardware, and the most interesting stories are generally
those where the characters don't understand the hardware but have to
deal with it anyway.

I tend to just stuff a character into a weird situation and see what
happens. If he comes alive enough that he's not doing what I'd expect,
then, imo, the readers will find him interesting.
