In a "people who go to sleep don't wake up" situation, they don't
realize they're protected, and they're going to think about going home
at some point (or going out to gather supplies, etc.). 

If there's some sort of industrial process which can't be left
unattended, they might shut it down or try to take turns going out and
coming back. Not everyone will come back, of course, either because
they couldn't stay awake or they just decided to bolt.
