A small but technically savy lot.
They'd have the skill, the means and reasonably the desire to make 
contact using the internet, either by putting up a website or conducting 
a white hat spam run.
Your hero would probably try to check the internet as soon as he 
realizes that theres something going on.
Would he realizes that an extended tin foil hat might help? Maybe(any 
EM-guys - from radio astronomers around the world to the local telecom 
or cable providers - that found their equipment giving of scale readings 
might suggest something along that line), maybe not, but it would reduce 
the air of mystery.

Also the discoverer isn't required to stay awake, a broadcast "stay 
inside shielded areas" is all thats needed from this party.
