Aluminium exhibits nasty fatiguing behavior without offering a
sufficiently better strength to weight ratio, you'd still get a gigant
with glass bones, barely able to move around.
To the concept of huge walkers leverage as well as the exponent in the
acceleration terms are harsh mistresses, they won't let you get away
without unobtanium for the mech/creature as well as its sup****ting ground.
Remeber: even if you build that thing sturdy enough - what good is it
for when the forces needed to move it around exeed the strength of your
sup****ting environment?
Making it light enough to move freely makes it susceptible to wind or
any force applied above its center of gravity as well.

Composite armor is needed anyways to avoid sinking right into almost any
floor. :)
