Picking them up and isolating them as the cause are two entirely
different things, especially if the aliens did test runs on their
equipment several times over a period of weeks to make sure that each
component was working properly before running them all at once to
produce the effect.

It might become a case of: "Oh, no, those weird signals again, but we
don't have time to waste trying to figure out what they are -- we have
a serious disease on our hands."
