Assuming the faces of the rods are (close to) perfect planes they 
joining would conduct heat just as well as a solid piece. The nature of 
this "waste" would make that quite easy to archive.
You could use these rods anywere a liquid cooling is undesireable, say 
in nuclear plants to reduce the chance of spilling irradiated coolant as 
well as to increase the operating temperature.
