This is accurate, but the straightforward explanation is that
he simply likes this sort of discussion about his sort of topic.
His ideas tend toward a particular pattern, usually involving
a "magic" item/technology and usually invented by a paranoid
mad scientist.

Wildepad's just a guy who likes a particular sort of concept,
and likes discussing it--even if the only discussion available
is pretty negative.  No big deal.  I'm much the same with
interstellar propulsion concepts.

I think you're accurate on the symptoms, but not the cause.
