The point is that suspension of disbelief while reading a story is
much greater than it is when someone lays out a small part of the
premise in complete bare-bones fa****on.

If I asked the question: What would be the sequence of failure for
skyscrapers subjected to a high wind from the same direction for
weeks? 

The responses would, I suspect, pretty uniformly be: such a sustained
wind is impossible.

That didn't stop Ballard's "The Wind from Nowhere" becoming popular.
