Change in velocity is still what is being observed, not acceleration. 
Yes, obviously, if the _change in velocity_ is small, then it can't be 
observed.  But the acceleration itself is never what is being observed, 
regardless of whether it is large or small.  Massively large 
accelerations cannot be detected if they result in small total changes 
in velocity.  You were attempting to nitpick something that was not 
wrong, and are now waving your arms about to justify it.
