No, it isn't.

*shrug* Not checking mails every couple minutes - much less using
info- or popup-windows telling people that there is new mail - is
pretty much the norm where I work. 

It's the calls that disctract most, yet most customers have grasped
that we *will* read their mail and thus neither call to tell that they
sent a mail nor call for these vague three-minutes things. 

I have to assume that you work in a very strange environment.
