Soul Rider wasn't really about an artificial universe, just a planet 
that had been subjected to an unusual terraforming approach. Humans 
learned how to manipulate the unformed "chaos" that permeates the void 
between universes, allowing them to reshape reality on a local scale, so 
they punched a bunch of holes and let the chaos-stuff permeate the 
environment of an uninhabitable planet so that they could change it into 
breathable air and other useful stuff. Then aliens from another 
dimension attacked, the holes had to be sealed to keep them from 
invading, and civilization collapsed for a long period in which the true 
nature of the "magic" they were using was lost.
