Thanks.  But, on the other hand, any given mass will weight much more, and
the energy extractable from any given chemical reaction will still be the
same.  So it will take more energy to move any given mass a lesser
distance, thus more mass to move the same amount of mass.  Ergo the three
stages to reach the upper reaches of the atmosphere, whereas in the
(relatively) benign Earth situation, three stages will take you into
orbit.
