   Depends entirely on the nutrient.  _Destiny's Road_ is a novel by
Larry Niven about a colony dealing with severe potassium deficiency.   
It's not one of Niven's best novels, and I hear that he got the symptoms
somewhat wrong, but it sounds like an example of what you're looking for.
