: in SF, fusion-powered space****ps often have to vent plasma from their
: reactors overboard in case of a malfunction such as a breached magnetic
: bottle.
"Often"? Can you name three writers who have done this?
: Is that in any way realistic?
Not particularly. Any of the authors give reasons, other than
a "breached magnetic bottle"?
: And, however realistic, what would it look like?
Depends on the specific technobabbelish reason why it was vented.
It wouldn't look like a gush of flame, or a gush of turbulent
glowy-cloud-like-stuff (or I don't see how/why it would look that way).
If it were a *lot* of plasma, very dense and hot, and visible at all,
it might be visible in a region close to the vent, sort of like blue-hot
gas in a neon tube but without the tube, spreading and fading quickly
to invisibility with distance from the vent. I imagine. Something like.
But again, depends mostly on the technobabblish reason why it was vented.
