Children of Everything

by Michael Ash <mike@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Apr 4, 2008 at 10:25 PM

In _Children of Men_, humanity suffers from unexplained infertility which
results in no babies having been born for years, and is expected to
eventually result in the extinction of the race. The reason isn't
explained. Maybe God just doesn't like people.

So let's make it a little more general. Maybe God doesn't like sex no
matter what does it. So one fine day sexual fertility simply switches off.

Asexual reproduction still works, but any sex never results in
fertilization. What happens?

Life won't come crashing to quite an instant halt since the body's cells
can still divide and all the really low orders of life keep going just
fine.

It seems to me that the first to notice may be researchers working with
fruit flies. I'm not completely clear but it sounds like the failure to
produce viable eggs may become apparent within a day or so of the event.
How long until people realize that it's more widespread, and affects all
plants and animals?

I assume that the atmosphere will remain intact for more than enough time
for small groups of humans to survive in the long term (until they all die

off from other causes or old age), but how does the world change in the
meantime, and afterwards?
