Sure. But as I mentioned, there are lots of molecular "leftovers"
around even if they are not the most efficient solutions (metabolisms
based on reducing sulfur, for instance). It's possible, but seems
unlikely to me based on the observed diversity of mechanisms. I can
never prove that God doesn't exist, either - but I suspect we'd agree
that then I'm not doing science.
