It depends how accurately you can measure the phase. I reckon that 
without any special optical devices you probably won't notice 
differences of about 5 degrees is phase. Now our Moon is about half a 
degree across, so you probably wouldn't notice the phase difference 
between two moons that were separated by 10 moon-widths or less.

Book covers that show multiple moons are likely to show them separated 
by much less than 10 moon-widths for aesthetic reasons.
