I think you probably mean "flouted".  "Flaunting" an official rule
would be like "aha, we have an official pronunciation and you don't,
you unlettered barbarians".  Flouting would be "I'll say jigawatt if I
wanna, and I sneer in scorn in the general direction of the Official
Pronunciation Bureau" (or "gigawatt", depending on the state of the
official version at the time).
