OK, so I found a screener on-line for the first direct-to-DVD movie,
and watched it last night. Found it in a binary newsgroup, though I
imagine it's on some torrent sites as well.
(And it was definitely a screener, not an advanced copy of the DVD,
as there were no opening or closing credits, and a few scenes where
the SFX weren't complete.)
It definitely finishes off the Ori storyline, and manages to do so
without feeling rushed...though in a sense, it felt a little too
deux ex machina (which actually is a more accurate expression than
usual, given that we're dealing with Ascended beings here).
I'll be interested in seeing how the opening credits are dealt with
on the DVD itself. There are a couple of surprise or quasi-surprise
character appearances that will be spoiled if the actors in question
appear in the opening creds. I'm guessing that just the six series
leads (Browder, Tapping, Shanks, Judge, Black, and Bridges) will
appear in the opening creds, but we'll see.
Overall, I liked it, but it's pretty much an average, or maybe
slightly above-average, episode of the series.
Line that should've been in the movie, but wasn't...
Mitchell: "You're terminated." (You'll know the scene when it
happens.)
Interesting bit of synchronicity, though. Last weekend, my wife and
I happened to catch the S10 episode "Line in the Sand" in syndication
(this is the ep where they want to use Merlin's out-of-phase device
to hide an entire village). It ends with Carter recovering in the
infirmary, and Mitchell bringing her macaroons. One of the final
scenes in "The Ark of Truth" turns out to be a follow-up to that
scene.
