3.8. As per usual, I liked it. I liked the deepening of the
questions the show's been presenting - and Dean becoming what he hates
most, what has tortured and ripped his family apart, what killed his
parents. That's got to be agony to consider. Katie Cassidy made Ruby
verge on likeable, but at the same time, utterly untrustworthy. She's
very Alex Krycek-like right now. And that's a very good thing.
Ddespite Supernatural's sometimes hinky gender issues, and a lot of
casual usage of ***** and skank in this episode in particular, to
describe women...in this case, I felt it worked as something Dean
would say and in those instances, maybe something understandable to
say. I thought this episode was about the fact that there is a
powerful, esoteric, feminine world. And it's just as petty, stupid,
and self-destructive as the masculine world. And that the
supernatural pretty much makes everyone fools while letting itself
break the number one rule of effective villainrys: don't tell the
heroes your plans! No matter how nebulous they are! Even Sam and
Dean were kind of eclipsed, which is fine for an episode now and
again. And the Winchester boys discussed their emotions, briefly.
Yes, emotions were discussed! Bunnies were mourned. And, and, and!
Big plusses for the goriness, the angst and the general atmosphere of
the last scene. Aw, flickering lights make me all nostalgic. More meh
for the still elusive and slightly unsatisfying mythology that doesn't
quite add up yet. People becoming demons? So what's a demon?
What's good? How is all of this decided? Why does the demon king
"rising in the west" want Sam so bad, who's got the marker on Dean's
soul and why do the demons play so fast and loose with killing the
Winchesters. If you can kill them, if you want to, if you kill every
other human with impunity...and you have them pinned up against the
wall, and are causing them severe internal damage by basically pu****ng
them through that wall...why aren't you killing them? I know, I know,
sheer force of hotness.
Since there's not really any discussion for the show outside of these
review posts - I'll say I'm quite excited for the final run of three
episodes. Hopefully a couple of my questions will get answered.
