I had the pleasure of meeting him in 1996  at a BOBW convention in
Brisbane. 
Aside from Voyager, back then I was most familiar with him from China
Beach.
He was a great speaker and a lovely man as I recall. I like seeing him on 
Stargate but I am saddened they could not bring back Elizabeth Weir if
they 
needed a new leader for the expedition. Why kill her character off so 
completley (assuming repli-Weir is a total replicator) if it was only to 
bring Amanda Tapping in for one season? Don't get me wrong, I love Sam,
but 
the whole thing just seems badly done to me. While I still enjoy the show,
I 
think it has lost something from that cast change.
