But we grow the cows. If we stopped eating them, we would stop breeding 
them, and soon there wouldn't be any. (We wouldn't leave them eating our 
precious pastures.)*

Whales are wild animals, and we may be wiping them out.

*I suspect this also applies to horses. If we gave up horseracing, 
horses might become extinct.
