How do you get "left wing" out of that film? Or even "political
thriller"?

People who aren't familiar with the source material may not know that
Clarke's novel ends with the Starchild preventing the outbreak of World
War III by destroying the superpowers' orbiting weapons platforms,
which had just been activated. The idea behind that would seem to be
at least somewhat related to the political tension in the 2010 film,
even if the platforms aren't mentioned.
