Ernest Shackleton?

Last of the great explorers, leader of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic
Expedition of 1914, the man who made Gene Kranz, James Lovell, and
the entire Apollo 13 team look like pansy-ass quitters, the guy who
John Locke dreams of growing up to be?  That Ernest Shackleton?

In August 1914, Ernest Shackleton led an expedition of twenty-eight
men to attempt a land crossing of Antarctica.  In January of 1915,
their ****p was trapped, and eventually destroyed, by ice.  This was
before ubiquitous radio, there were no other human beings within a
thousand miles anyhow, they had maybe three months of provisions,
Antarctic winter was coming early, and World War One had started 
while they were en route.

On May 12, 1916, Ernest Shackleford and five of his men walked down
out of a previously-impassable mountain range into a whaling station
on South Georgia Island, fifteen hundred miles away by land and sea,
and said "We're gonna need a bigger boat".  Then commandeered four
successively bigger boats to rescue the remainder of his crew.

Every single one of whom made it home alive.


Yeah, I want him on Lostaway Island.  Safe return assured.
