Depends on where you are. Verizon has been worthless in maintaining
their landline infrastructure here in New Hamp****re. Last year,
when we had a substantial amount of flooding in many parts of the
state, some areas were without land-line service for months. Verizon
had to supply affected customers with cell phones free of charge
while they fixed the lines.

And it's not going to get any better in the near future. Verizon is
trying to sell their landline business in all of northern New England
(NH, Maine, and Vermont) to Fairpoint. If the sale goes through (and
it's expected to), it'll be quite a while before Fairpoint can get
everything up to snuff.

As for DSL, my wife's and my apartment is just a tad too far from
the nearest CO. In fact, the building at the other end of the
apartment complex gets DSL, but none of the other buildings do. That's
how close we are to the line. Again, Verizon didn't want to bother
setting up another CO.

There's no fiber anywhere in my town yet. No wireless internet
service. And our apartment is on the wrong side of the building
to get a clear view of the right part of the sky for satellite
service (we can't get DirectTV or Dish Network, either).

And we're not even in the boonies. We're 15 minutes away from
****tsmouth, and the next town over from the U of NH. Where we are,
it's Comcast or dial-up or nothing.
