Well, there are certainly alternatives but they're all pretty hard to
fathom. From what we've seen of Claire and her baby so far suggests
that she is a relatively conscientious mother which makes the thought
that would stay on the island willingly and let Kate take and raise
Aaron unlikely. It seems even more unlikely that Claire would leave
the island but abandon her child. The most likely scenario is that a
lot of people died or remained behind on the island -- perhaps the
"Oceanic  Six" really are the only ones who are known to have returned
to civilization. (I think that it's safe to say from this episode that
Ben is still in hiding even if he is off the island.)

I suppose that something might have happened to Claire (and perhaps to
some other people) which makes it impossible for her to leave the
island, ala Vina in Star Trek's "The Cage." This would certainly be in
keeping with the magical nature of the island and would open a whole
new avenue for the writers to screw with our minds.
