And Jack's entire testimony was a lie.

There has to be a reason why the "official" story says that there were
initially 8 survivors, but only 6 rescued.

Here is the scenario as I see it.

The oceanic 6, along with two people who were not on the flight, are
taken to the freighter. I am guessing that the two others are Desmond
(he is already on his way to the freighter) and Juliet.

They cannot be taken back to the mainland on the freighter, because
there will be too many questions asked. They are taken to another island
near the "official" crash site where they can be "found."

Jack and company set up a signal fire, which is eventually seen by a
passing boat. Some of the crew are sent to the island to investigate.
They meet Jack (or someone) on the beach who tells them that they are
the survivors of Oceanic flight 815.

"How many of you are there?"

"Eight. Plus a baby born since the crash."

The news is re****ted worldwide that 8 survivors of Oceanic flight 815
have been found on an island. Upon further investigation it is found
that two of the survivors were not on flight 815. No plausible
explanation can be found to account for the other two survivors. A new
message is sent out that there were not 8, but 6 Oceanic 815 survivors.
In order to explain the discrepancy, it is re****ted the there were
initially 8 survivors, but only 6 are still alive. The Oceanic 6 are
brought to LA with much fanfare, while the other two are brought back
quietly to avoid questions that can't be answered.

Or not. It is all just speculation.
