The reason I think the 8 initial survivors is significant, is that it is
totally unnecessary to the made-up story.

There were 6 survivors rescued. They only need to account for those 6.
But for some reason, they add an otherwise unnecessary detail about 2
more survivors. Who were they? Where are the bodies? Buried? Dragged off
by polar bears? Washed out to sea? By making up a story about 2
additional survivors, they are adding to the questions that will have to
be answered. It creates more to the story that the Oceanic 6 will have
to agree on and remember. It complicates things.

I think the story about the additional 2 survivors was concocted to
avoid answering additional questions. It is a way to explain away 2
survivors who are not Oceanic flight 815 survivors.

was wrong about Lost.
