No, it makes the defense attorney one of the people who didn't know
who (supposedly) lived or died and needed to ask Jack about that
sort of thing.

Well, OK, it makes the jury a bunch of people who maybe didn't know
that, and the defense attorney a guy who was asking questions from
the jury's POV.  I presume the defense attorney knew the answer to
every single question he asked.
