The cover story doesn't have to be perfect. I expect it to be full of
holes that nobody can verify. The story only has to make a lot more
sense than the truth.

"The plane didn't really crash where it was found. No. We've been on an
island that nobody will ever find because it is inside a time-warp
****tal that is caused by and electro-magnetic anomaly! Really! You have
to believe me!! How else do you explain the smoke monster? Or polar
bears? Someone has to believe me!"

The cover story also has to protect the Losties.

"The Marshal? We killed him. He was going to die anyway. Elizabeth? We
killed her. Anna Lucia? We killed her too. Shannon? Another killing.
Paulo? Nikki? Buried alive. Boone? Sacrificed to the island. Michael?
Walt? They must have left the island on the wrong bearing and got lost
in the time-space continuum. Yes, that's it. Eko? Well, remember what I
said about the smoke monster?"

Uh huh. Even a cover story that is full of holes is better than the truth.
