So according to you, somehow the United States of America-- one 
continent on one planet in a galaxy 2,000,000 light years away-- has 
asserted legal jurisdiction over the planet on which their science team 
conducts its business.

Leaving aside the philosophical legal issues involved, if it's U.S. law 
at play, then the assertion that Carter couldn't legally keep Teyla from 
leaving is a false one.
