Because going in a straight line would require them to be in line-of-sight
of
the ****p; that doesn't strike me as necessary.  Because the storm that
happened would make it very difficult to go in a straight line (hence the
near
crash).  Because the people who jumped out were not in a straight line,
but
were instead all over the place.

In other words, because the evidence on the show does not require, and in
the
last example above doesn't even *sup****t*, the thought that they came in
on a
straight line.
