I think it helps if you read other sources about the show to have all
of it make sense. Faraday is merely proving one of Einstein's
theories, which certainly doesn't have a science fiction background.
In fact, as we speak, scientists are able to levitate small objects by
manipulating the force between two objects (Casimir Effect). Again,
no science fiction. And we are certainly receiving answers about the
show if you're paying attention, like explaining how the plane got
there in the first place -- remember how they were off course, in a
storm for a while, etc? It's kinda like that helicopter ride, huh?
The Island has Black Rock (not the ****p, but the element), which has
its own magnetic properties. You'll have to wait to see how it all
pulls together with the hatch explosion, Smokey, Jacob, etc.
When the producers said that this all can be explained using science,
they aren't necessarily referring to common-knowledge items on the
high school level. Many of the "weird" things happening on the island
do have roots to things that can be explained on a mathematical level,
but haven't actually been proven due to our scientific limitations.
To see Faraday conducting the experiment with the rat is plausible,
but is certainly done quite liberally. After all, this IS a TV
drama!
