I interpret that statement as saying that they kept things in season 1
pretty ambiguous as to whether there was a fantastical explanation for
anything.  The Walt stuff could be coincidence.  Richard Malkin didn't
necessarily know the future.

And, to be fair, I don't think the time travel aspect existed until it
was decided to bring Desmond back for the third season.  That decision
took place about 1 1/2 years after the interview.  During the
interview Desmond was probably "the guy in the hatch" in the
producers' minds, if that.
