Actually the producers have kept to their statement about no 'time
travel'.  Desmond never physically traveled through time, his mind did. 
Since his mind consists of electrical energy it might be possible.

There is a physicist by the name of Dr. Mallet who is studying the
possibility of sending electrical messages back in time.  I saw him
discuss this theory on the TV series 'The Universe' which airs on the
History channel.  I don't remember all the details, but had to do with
transmitting light in a gravitational vortex.  Which would sent light
particles on the subatomic level back in time.  That's at least the way
I understood it.

It's possible that Desmond's mind was sent through time via some sort of
electrical gravitational vortex.
