Before the "incident", the Swan hatch was used for something else. After
the 
Incident, they changed the hatch to the number punching stuffies ^_^

Maybe they had a truck or container that filled up as they sent the 
notebooks and this container was picked up on occation. This makes sense
if 
they want to keep the experiment a secret. If ANYONE other than those 
involved find out about it, it might leak out and ruin the experiment.
