The suggestion that they may have used the hatch for something else prior
to
the alleged incident doesn't explain why they set it up to look like a
stupid
psychology experiment after the alleged incident.

Ok.  Why did they continue to ferry the observers in to write and send
their notebooks long (very long given the size of the pile) after they
had stopped collecting said notebooks?

What's that got to do with anything?  Ben was on the island.  Juliette
was on the island.  Ben claimed to have a cure for cancer.  Ben asked
Juliette to solve the pregnancy problem.  Juliette failed to ask Ben
for details of the cancer cure.  Juliette was shown to be a reasonably
skilled medical professional.  Investigating the possible connection
between a mysterious pregnancy problem and a mysterious cancer cure
should have been her highest priority.
