I disagree with this -- actually I think it's the exact opposite.  I
think that, starting with the end date granted by ABC, they have
mapped out exactly how to get to the ending they had in mind, and are
going toward it in a straight line.

On the other hand, before the end date I think they had to creatively
fill gaps on the fly, not knowing when the show would end, and the
sprawl took them to unexpected places, rendering a lot of what they
said in interviews as inaccurate or inconsistent after the fact.  And
some of that stuff will now retroactively make no sense (like Penny
meeting Desmond at the stadium for instance).  This is unavoidable
with such a huge show and I will cut them some slack in gathering up
the loose ends, as the writing has been generally superb.
