So what were all those bits with him in the past that showed up after he
turned his key, but before he woke up on the ground. I thought that we
were seeing him going through the past in a more cognitive way than just
flashback.

Yeah, he got blowed up in the hallway. 

Okay, you know, I may be mixing some scenes up. I always thought that he
knew prophetic things because he had done a mental timetravel, and that he
was actually reliving the times, not just like he was recounting it from
what he read in someone's journal.
