Because the fetus is a foreign invader. The fetus is not part of the
body that's why the womb acts like a masking agent to hide the fetus
from the white blood cells who would interpret the fetus as a parasite
and attack it.  Also, you have to remember that womb has to pull
double-duty it has to protect the fetus and hide the fact that
additional genetic material is inside the body, ie, the father, which
if discovered would whip the white blood cells up in a frenzy causing
them to attack causing the female to have a miscarrage.

However, Jules said that the problem occurs in the 2 or 3 trimester,
in which the womb should already be adequately hiding the baby from
the white cells therefore you might look to disfiguration. During the
pregnancy the unexpected growths can occur inside the uterus walls
causing the body to spontaneous abort the baby. Which in the LOST-
verse is probably more like what is happening. Unexplained growth is
happening with the urterous probably causing the fetus to mature
faster that the womb or uterus can hold. And that's only if a normal
conception took place.
