Which arguably means that pretty much anything can be done: since
logic doesn't play a big role, go for emotionally satisfying or some
other metric.  If you see the story as that of the Connors, then you
might go for using Cameron as the seed for a kinder Skynet, but have
John and Skynet protect their past by still sending out Terminators to
guide their past actions.  You can avoid the wiping out of
civilization by having John sacrifice his childhood to prevent it.
