I think the back-arrow became underscore.  I started using computers in 
the late 70's, and some of the terminals I used still had the 
back-arrow.  I think DecWriters had an option to print either underscore 
or back-arrow.  And some operating systems, when you were using a 
printing terminal and typed a sequence of DELs, would display a 
back-arrow, then all the characters you'd deleted, then another 
back-arrow when you typed another character.
