By the late 1970s, the ASCII terminals got more sophisticated and CRTs
were available as well.  By then more of the control codes could be
utilized.

As an aside, Western Union people could read Baudot tapes by eye, but
had trouble reading ASCII tapes, one reason WU didn't like it.  A
message would come in on tape, someone would read the header and route
it out to the proper destination.  By the 1950s, most of that was done
automatically.  It was slick in 1950, but too slow in 1970, even
though leased telegraph lines for data transmission were cheap.

The people in the very early 1960s deserve a lot of credit for their
foresightedness in designing ASCII and System/360, products that have
stood the test of time and still are vital to this day 45 years later.

Does she sup****t 1401/7090 emulation by micocrode?

I bet Mr. Hotshot kid wouldn't know how to program his way out of a
paper bag in Autocoder or how to handle the wire hubs on her control
panel plugboard.
